Rugby is making a comeback at the 2024 National Sports Festival, dubbed the “Gateway Games,” set to take place from May 16 to 30, 2025, in Ogun State.
The Joint Technical Committee for the 22nd edition of the festival has approved the sport’s reinstatement, citing its growing popularity, grassroots engagement, and strong national support.
Dr. Ademola Are, President of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), praised the decision, thanking the National Sports Commission’s Director General, Chief Bukola Olopade, Ogun State’s Sports Development Commissioner, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, and the committee for their commitment to advancing sports in Nigeria.
“This is a major milestone for rugby,” Dr. Are said. “It’s not only a chance to showcase thrilling competition but also a platform to identify talent for the national team ahead of the Africa Cup Sevens in Mauritius, June 18-23, 2025.”
The return of rugby is expected to energize fans and stakeholders, reinforcing the festival’s role as a hub for talent discovery and sports growth.
