The Forum resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger

As the elections for the year 2027 draw near, the governors who were elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, came to a unanimous decision yesterday to refrain from joining any coalition or merger.

At the meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum, which took place in Ibadan, Oyo State, a number of important governors were present. These governors included Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Peter Mbah of Enugu, Agbu Kefas of Taraba, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa, Ademola Adeleke of Osun, and Douye Diri of Bayelsa.

A statement announcing the decision was issued at the end of the Forum’s meeting in Ibadan. Bala Mohammed, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, read the statement and provided a clarification.

He stated that the PDP continues to be open to embracing individuals, parties, and groups who are devoted to saving Nigeria and supporting good governance.

It reads, “The Forum resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger. However, as a major opposition party, it welcomes any party, persons, or groups willing to join it with a view to wrestling power and enthroning good leadership in 2027.”

Reiterating their stances on the party’s national secretary, the governors said, “The Forum reiterates its position taken in Asaba regarding the National Secretary of the party.

“The deputy secretary temporarily act as national secretary pending the nomination and ratification of a substantive secretary from the Southeast zone at its next meeting.”

In terms of national security, the Forum voiced serious alarm over the increasing unrest in several states, including Borno, Katsina, Edo, and Plateau.

It pushed for a bottom-up strategy that gives local governments more authority to protect their areas and urged a reevaluation and restructuring of the country’s security architecture.

The Forum has also stated its support for Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers State, in light of the present political turmoil and the state’s proclamation of a state of emergency.

Prior to the party’s national convention, which is set to take place in Kano from August 28-30, 2025, the Forum also stated that a national gathering will be held on May 27, 2025, to form a Zoning Committee.

The national convention committee was headed by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State and the zoning committee was headed by Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, according to the communiqué.
