Leicester City twice came from behind in a thrilling encounter at Brighton to stop their eight-match losing run, earning a 2-2 draw at the Amex Stadium. Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side showed some fight to end their goal drought, with Stephy Mavididi and Caleb Okoli scoring crucial goals for the Foxes.
The match looked to be another miserable afternoon for Leicester City when Joao Pedro netted the opener from the spot after Conor Coady’s handball was spotted by VAR. However, Mavididi sparked Leicester into action and levelled before the break to end their run of eight Premier League games without a goal. “City were a much greater threat on the attack thanks to the introduction of Mavididi, and in particular with his combination with Bilal El Khannouss,” reported Jordan Blackwell.
Brighton, who were booed off by some sections of the home faithful at full-time, did edge back in front from another Pedro penalty – again awarded by VAR. But Okoli headed Leicester level, scoring his maiden goal and earning the Foxes a crucial point.
The result only delays the inevitability of relegation for Leicester City as they are 14 points from safety. However, this was a more spirited performance from the Foxes, who could have won the match. They were the better team for the final half-hour, with Bilal El Khannouss hitting the post with a few minutes to go.
“A point may not be enough to hold off relegation,” reported Jordan Blackwell. “City could be relegated before they kick another ball if Wolves beat Spurs on Sunday and Manchester United the following weekend.” Despite the relegation threat, Leicester City fans will be encouraged by their team’s performance, which showed some much-needed fight and determination.
The Foxes made several changes to their team, abandoning the back-five system and bringing in wingers Mavididi and Kasey McAteer, the latter for his first league start since December. Okoli was also brought in for the injured Wout Faes. These changes seemed to pay off, as Leicester City were more threatening on the attack and managed to create several chances.
In the end, a point may not be enough for Leicester City to escape relegation, but it was a welcome respite for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side. For Brighton, the draw dented their hopes of a European finish, and they will be disappointed by their lackluster performance at home. “For Brighton this was another lacklustre performance at home against a newly promoted side – they will end the season having not beaten Ipswich, Southampton or Leicester at home,” reported Sky Sports.
The match stats highlighted the Foxes’ determination, with Leicester City outscoring Brighton in the second half. However, Brighton’s wastefulness in front of goal ultimately cost them the win. As the season nears its end, both teams will be looking to finish on a high note, with Leicester City fighting for survival and Brighton pushing for a European spot.
