Nigeria is called a project management graveyard.
APPPMON, which stands for the Association of Practising Professional Project Managers of Nigeria, has stated that Nigeria has the largest number of projects that have failed in the entire world.
However, the group claimed that its new effort, the APPPMON Body of Knowledge and Innovation (ABOKI), will address concerns of failed projects in the country.
According to the group, Nigeria is often referred to as a project management graveyard. There are a number of projects in Nigeria that have been abandoned, have experienced cost overruns, or have been subject to policy.
Also there has been a loss of trillions of dollars due to initiatives that have either failed or been abandoned.
Dr. Inemi Erete Stephen, a senior association official and the chief editor of the ABOKI Research Project, gave a speech yesterday in Port Harcourt during the launching of the new initiative to the media.
He said that the new program was a response to the unfavorable project abandonment that has occurred in the country.
“It is not an exaggeration that over 1,300 projects have been allegedly abandoned by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). These estimates are just for tangible projects.
“Today, Nigeria is called a project management graveyard. Today, we see a project landscape dotted with abandoned projects, cost overruns, or policy. Trillions have been lost to failed or abandoned projects.
“ABOKI is not a religious, racist, ethnic, tribal or cultural initiative. It is a product of research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and excelled in every field of human endeavour.
“It is a response to the negative narrative of failed projects in the country. It is a Nigerian innovation designed by professionals and tested against Nigerian realities.”
