Smoking, drinking, and eating while driving is an offence under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018.

A zero-tolerance policy has been proclaimed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) against motorists who consume alcohol, smoke, or consume food while driving.

The LASTMA has issued a warning to anybody who violate this policy, stating that they may face prosecution and possibly jail terms.

This information was released in a post that was published on the company’s official X handle on Wednesday, April 9.

By prohibiting drivers from being distracted while behind the wheel, the agency stated that the law is intended to make the roadways safer for everyone.

According to the law, those who violate it run the possibility of having their vehicle seized, receiving a penalty of three months in prison, or being sentenced to six months of community service, depending on the seriousness of the offense and the conclusion of the court investigation.

On X LASTMA wrote, “Smoking, drinking, and eating while driving is an offence under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018.

“Additional Penalty: Impound vehicle/ Three (3) Months imprisonment or six (6) months community service.”

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, recently voiced his concern on the increasing number of auto accidents and the consequent loss of lives that could have been prevented in the state.
