The ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is seeking to retain its dominance in the state, with Governor Chukwuma Soludo having already secured the party’s ticket and Nicholas Ukachukwu has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer, the ‘battle line’ has been drawn

The Anambra State governorship election, scheduled for November 2025, is expected to be a highly contested and intriguing affair. Various political parties and candidates are already engaging in intense maneuvering, jostling for position and advantage. Soludo of Apga is seeking re-election for another term.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political parties are also in the fray, with several aspirants vying for their respective party’s tickets.

Nicholas Ukachukwu has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer for the Anambra governorship election, defeating his closest challenger, Valentine Ozigbo, in the primary election held on Saturday. Ukachukwu secured 1,455 votes, while Ozigbo trailed behind with 67 votes.

In his victory speech, Ukachukwu vowed to deliver Anambra State to the APC, stating, “We shall deliver Anambra to the APC. One thing I want to say here, nobody has won the governorship of Anambra without my support; it has never happened before. I have been playing godfatherism, but now I want to be the father of the father, no more godfather”

One of the key issues in the election is the zoning principle, with some parties advocating for a merit-based selection process, while others insist on rotating the governorship among the three senatorial zones.

The Anambra people have historically demonstrated a preference for intellectual depth and technocratic sophistication in their leaders, rather than just wealth or political connections.

As the election approaches, it’s clear that the battle for Anambra will be fierce, with various moneybags and intellectuals vying for power. The people of Anambra will ultimately decide who leads them next, but one thing is certain – the outcome will have significant implications for the state’s future.
