Independence Bridge has been ordered to reopen by the Minister of Works
The Independence Bridge, which is situated on Victoria Island in Lagos, has been ordered to reopen with immediate effect by David Umahi, who is the Minister of Works.
As a result of the closure of the Independence/Mekwen Bridge (inbound Marina/CMS route) for renovations, it caused motorists who were traveling to the Lagos Island axis in Lagos State to become stuck in the highway.
Recall that the Lagos State Government has stated that the Independence/Mekwen Bridge (inbound Marina/CMS route) would be temporarily closed for emergency repairs beginning on March 19, 2025 till May 26, 2025.
After a significant amount of traffic congestion had engulfed the Ikoyi neighborhood of Lagos, the minister issued the decree on Wednesday.
Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, confirmed the most recent development.
Kesha said that her team is already working to implement corrective measures in order to reopen the bridge for vehicular traffic. This is due to the fact that certain sections of the bridge have already been damaged.
Kesha said, “The minister has directed me to open it. But as it is we are trying to see how we can do remedial measures so that we can open the bridge for vehicular movement because we have already broken parts of the bridge.
“We are still unsure if commuters will be able to use it tomorrow. But we are currently working overnight to do some remedial work. We are working on that. The destruction had gone a bit far, but all hands are on deck to, hopefully by tomorrow, open the bridge to traffic.”
