Man arraigned for setting cocoa trees, palm trees, plantain trees, and kolanut trees owned by his brother on fire

An agriculturalist named Oyinlola Jacob, who is from the state of Ondo, has been taken into custody for setting fire to his brother’s N20 million property.

An arraignment was later held for Oyinlola, who is 56 years old, before an Akure Magistrate Court. According to reports, he committed the offense on January 29, 2025, at Odebei Farm, which is located in Ipogun, which is located in Ondo State.

There were cocoa trees, palm trees, plantain trees, and kolanut trees on the land that Ilemobayo Jacob owned. Oyinlola was brought before the court to face a single count of arson; however, he entered a plea of not guilty the moment the accusation was read to him.

Taiwo Oniyere, the prosecutor for the police department, stated that three witnesses will testify in the case; nevertheless, he requested leave from the court to review the case file and get ready for the trial.

The attorney for the defense, O.A. Adanlawo, did not refuse the motion made by the prosecution; rather, he pleaded with the judge to release his client on bail with liberal conditions.

He reassured the judge that his client would not violate the terms of the bail and would furnish sureties that could be trusted.

In his decision, Magistrate Olusola Olujobi granted bail to the defendant in the amount of N10 million, with two sureties in the same amount.

The judge ordered that the sureties must be residents of the court’s jurisdiction, that they must present an affidavit of means, and that they must submit two photographs that are passport size.

However, Jacob was unable to fulfill the requirements for his release from jail, and as a result, he was remanded to the Olokuta Correctional Centre. For further consideration, the case will be rescheduled for the 29th of July, 2025.
