Operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos, have detained a 45-year-old man for alleged cultism and illegal possession of firearms. The Zonal Public Relations Officer, CSP Umma Ayuba, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos State.
According to Ayuba, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, received an intelligence report on the activities of some suspected cultists.
The intelligence report led to the deployment of the Officer-in-charge of Zonal Dragon Squad II, led by DSP Akeem Adeyemi, for a discrete operation. The operation resulted in the apprehension of the suspect, while others escaped through a nearby bush.
Ayuba stated that several items were recovered from the suspect, including “one locally made single-barrel pistol, six live cartridges, 21 voter cards with different names (suspected to be fake), and one emerald pump action gun with breach No. 1335.”
The investigation is ongoing, and the suspect will be charged to court after the investigation. The police are working to clamp down on cult activities and related crimes in the state.
This recent arrest is part of the police’s efforts to tackle the growing issue of cultism in Lagos. In a similar operation, the Lagos State Police Command recently apprehended a 23-year-old suspected cultist, Rafiu Odeyemi, and recovered a firearm.
The police are urging residents to report any suspicious activities or information about cult groups to the authorities. The Lagos State Police Command is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and is working tirelessly to address the issue of cultism in the state.
The suspect’s detention and the recovery of firearms are significant developments in the police’s efforts to combat cultism. The police are expected to continue their operations to apprehend other suspected cultists and recover more illegal firearms.
