The Bayelsa State contingent departed Yenagoa for Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Tuesday to participate in the upcoming Niger Delta Sports Festival, set to run from April 1-9, 2025. The Honourable Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Daniel Igali, bid farewell to the athletes, expressing his confidence in their ability to represent the state admirably.

In his remarks, Igali praised the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for organizing the festival, which he described as a unique event due to its emphasis on equitable participation. “This festival stands out by ensuring all states field contingents of equal size, leveling the playing field compared to other competitions where team sizes can vary widely,” he said.

Conveying the support of Governor Douye Diri, Igali encouraged the athletes to compete with honor and seize the opportunity to gain valuable experience ahead of the National Sports Festival in Ogun State next month. “The Governor’s blessings are with you. Use this platform to showcase your talent and prepare for what lies ahead,” he urged.

While stressing that athlete development is the priority over merely chasing medals, Igali expressed optimism about Bayelsa’s performance. “Our focus is on growth, but make no mistake—we’re here to compete fiercely and uphold Bayelsa’s strong sporting legacy,” he asserted.

As the contingent set off for Uyo, Igali wished them success and called on them to serve as proud representatives of both Bayelsa State and the broader Ijaw Nation.
