The maiden South-West Games came to a thrilling end on Friday, March 28, 2025, with Super Eagles’ Captain, William Troost-Ekong, making a special appearance to inspire athletes and officials at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, in Lagos.

Ekong, who played a crucial role in Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, was the cynosure of all eyes as he joined other dignitaries to kickstart the competition, featuring athletes from the six South-West states of the federation.

The President of the Organising Committee, Akogun Lanre Alfred, highlighted the significance of the Games, saying: “The South West Games 2025 is an exemplary initiative that will promote sports development and deepen the historical and cultural connections among South West states.”

Alfred added: “It’s simply to create a platform for our youth to thrive, to develop their talent for the advancement of our region. We are grateful to all the South West governors, who endorsed this initiative because they all have the interest of the region at heart in terms of development.”

In related news, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is waiting for FIFA’s reaction to the case Lesotho proffered against South Africa, who fielded an ineligible player in their match on Friday. The NFF is exploring options to qualify the Super Eagles for the 2026 World Cup.

Meanwhile, the Guild of Sports Editors in Nigeria has called for the resignation of the NFF Board and Coach Finidi George, citing the team’s poor performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifying series.
