Tony Elumelu, Nigeria’s renowned entrepreneur and banker, has been appointed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to its Advisory Council on Entrepreneurship and Growth.

This prestigious appointment is a testament to Elumelu’s tireless efforts to promote African entrepreneurship and economic development.

As the Founder and Group Chair of Heirs Holdings, Elumelu has been a driving force behind various initiatives aimed at empowering African entrepreneurs and promoting private-sector-led development in Africa.

His economic philosophy, Africapitalism, emphasizes the role of the private sector in driving Africa’s economic development, and he has championed this concept through various initiatives and public engagements.

The IMF highlighted Elumelu’s impressive track record in empowering African entrepreneurs through his foundation, which has funded, mentored, and trained over 25,000 African entrepreneurs since 2015. This achievement demonstrates his commitment to creating a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem in Africa.

As a member of the IMF’s Advisory Council, Elumelu will work closely with other global business leaders, policymakers, and academics to identify and address regulatory barriers to entrepreneurship. He will also recommend policies that enhance resource allocation, stimulate innovation, and catalyze sustainable private sector-led economic growth.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva noted that the Advisory Council brings together leading thinkers and practitioners to share their views and experiences on how macroeconomic and financial policies can provide a supportive environment for innovation, entrepreneurship, and productivity.

Tony Elumelu’s educational background played a significant role in shaping his successful career.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Ambrose Alli University, where he graduated with a Lower Second Class degree.

Elumelu furthered his education by obtaining a Master of Science degree in Economics from the University of Lagos. Additionally, he has attended executive programs at prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School, IMD Business School in Switzerland, and the Singapore Institute of Management.

His strong educational foundation in economics and business has equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in his endeavors, ultimately leading to his appointment to the International Monetary Fund’s Advisory Council on Entrepreneurship and Growth.
