Nigeria Premier Football League(NPFL) leaders Remo Stars held on to their eight-point advantage at the top of the table with a 2-0 win over former champions Enyimba in Ikenne on Thursday.
The win, which was secured through goals from Olamilekan Adedayo and Samson Olasupo, marked the 19th victory of the season for Daniel Ogunmodede’s side. Adedayo opened the scoring for the Ikenne side after 28 minutes, while mid-season signing Olasupo doubled the advantage in the 68th minute with his third goal of the campaign.
The Sky Blue Stars now have 60 points after 30 games this season, and they could extend their eight-point lead ahead of Rivers United by the time they play their outstanding fixture against struggling Lobi Stars.
Remo Stars’ win over Enyimba was a significant one, as it halted the latter’s resurging ambition of picking a continental ticket in the league. Enyimba’s defeat in Ikenne saw them drop to the ninth position on the log with 43 points after 31 games.
In other NPFL matches, Akwa United moved out of the relegation zone after a 2-0 win over Niger Tornadoes, while Plateau United continued to steer clear of the drop with a crucial 1-0 win over reigning champions Rangers International in Enugu.
Remo Stars’ lead at the top of the table is a testament to their consistency and determination this season. With 60 points after 30 games, they are well on their way to securing the NPFL title. However, the season is far from over, and Remo Stars will need to maintain their focus and momentum if they are to achieve their goal.
Enyimba, on the other hand, will need to regroup and refocus if they are to salvage their season. Their defeat to Remo Stars was a setback, but they still have a chance to turn things around and secure a continental ticket.
