Dr. George Nwaeke’s resignation as the Head of Service of Rivers State was unveiled on Tuesday in a statement from the Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Sole Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas.

His departure has sparked discussions given the current political backdrop in the state, following President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency.

This unprecedented move included the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Ordu, and all members of the State Assembly, a decision that has faced significant backlash from political leaders, civil society organizations, and an active portion of the state’s populace.

The statement announcing Nwaeke’s resignation appreciated his contributions to the Sole Administrator’s administration during his brief tenure, wishing him success in his future endeavors.

“The Office of His Excellency The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas CFR, is saddened to announce the resignation of the Head of Service, Rivers State, Dr. George Nwaeke, FCA, Mni.

His Excellency appreciates the immense contributions he has shown this administration in the short period he served and wishes him well in his future endeavors,” it read.

In light of Nwaeke’s resignation, Dr. (Mrs.) Iyingi Brown, the Permanent Secretary for Welfare in the Office of the Head of Service, has been appointed to serve in an acting capacity until a permanent successor is designated.

While congratulating her on this interim appointment, Ibas emphasized his commitment to ensuring neutrality, peace, and stability within Rivers State amidst the political upheaval currently affecting governance.

Additionally, the statement confirmed the appointment of Professor Ibibia Lucky Worika as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

This choice followed an extensive evaluation of his credentials and capabilities, reflecting a commitment to leadership that draws on experience and expertise in areas critical to the state’s governance. Worika’s varied background in academia, international legal practice, and high-level policy advice positions him as a valued asset in supporting the Sole Administrator in advancing the President’s directives.

The implications of these leadership changes reflect a foundational reshaping of the governance structure in Rivers State as it navigates heightened political tensions and seeks to establish stability. The appointment of these new officials, effective immediately, indicates a strategic response to the challenges faced by the state during this transitional period.
