Rivers United coach Finidi George has admitted that his team was lucky to have secured a 1-0 win over Ikorodu City in their Nigeria Premier Football League match-day 30 game in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

The 2022 NPFL champions left it late against the newly promoted side, with Bolu Sholumade’s late strike securing the hard-earned win. The victory closed the gap between Rivers United and Remo Stars to five points.

Finidi praised Ikorodu City, saying, “They play good football and they bring physicality as well. We must commend them for the run they are having.” He also acknowledged that his team was lucky to have won, stating, “That was a lucky one, but we will take it any day, anytime.”

Rivers United’s win was a crucial one, as it keeps them in contention for the league title. With eight games remaining, Finidi is hopeful that league leaders Remo Stars will slip up, allowing his team to capitalize.

“We just have to keep pushing to keep piling the pressure on Remo. We will see how things go, but for us, we want to keep winning,” Finidi said.

Rivers United’s next game is against Bayelsa United, who grabbed a point against Enyimba in Aba on Sunday. With the title race heating up, Rivers United will be looking to secure another crucial win.
