Five minutes later, Kosta Barbarouses, who replaced the injured Chris Wood, chipped the ball over advancing New Caledonia goalkeeper Rocky Nyikeine. Substitute Eli Just added a third goal with 10 minutes remaining, securing the win for New Zealand.

The victory came at a cost, however, as skipper Chris Wood suffered a hip injury in the 54th minute. Wood, who has been in excellent form for Nottingham Forest with 18 goals in the Premier League this season, was forced to hobble off the field.

New Zealand coach Darren Bazeley expressed concern over Wood’s injury but praised his team’s resilience. “It’s not great for us losing our captain and our goalscorer. It was a difficult thing for the team, but they came through so well.”

New Caledonia, ranked 152 in the world, put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell short. They will now enter an intercontinental playoff in hopes of securing a World Cup spot.

The 2025 World Cup has been expanded to 48 teams, allowing for direct entry from the Oceania qualifying competition for the first time. New Zealand’s appearance in the World Cup will mark a significant milestone for the team, and they will look to make a lasting impact on the international stage.
