The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) will host the Lagos State Athletics Association (LSAA)-sanctioned The Athletics School Games (TASG) tomorrow. The event, which has grown from 11 schools in its inaugural edition to 16 schools this year, promises to be an exciting competition. Defending champions, Grange, will face stiff competition from other schools eager to dethrone them.
The athletes will compete in both elementary and secondary school categories, with the organizers registering the tournament with World Athletics (WA) to ensure global recognition of the athletes’ times. According to LSAA’s Technical Director, Funmi Otegbeye, “We are set for the event because we want to improve on what we did in 2024. All is ready, and we look forward to an exciting event this year.”
The event’s initiator, Seun Akinbohun, emphasized that TASG aims to create opportunities for athletes to excel and be discovered by scouts. “We’ve expanded the event to include more kids, age categories, and flexibility,” he said.
With the involvement of WA, the event is expected to attract more attention from scouts and athletics enthusiasts. The organizers hope to expand the event to include public schools in the future, promoting friendly competitions between public and private schools.
As the event continues to grow, it’s clear that TASG is becoming a premier platform for young athletes in Lagos to showcase their talents. With the support of LSAA, WA, and other stakeholders, the future of athletics in Nigeria looks bright.
The stage is set for an exciting competition at YABATECH tomorrow. Will Grange defend their title, or will a new champion emerge? One thing is certain: the athletes, coaches, and spectators are all in for a thrilling experience.
