Former Super Eagles midfielder Etim Esin has expressed his confidence in Victor Boniface‘s ability to end his goal drought for Nigeria ahead of their crucial World Cup qualifier games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. Boniface, who has made 11 appearances for the Super Eagles since his debut in September 2023, is yet to score for the national team.

Esin, who spoke with newsmen, believes that Boniface’s lack of goals for Nigeria is not a reflection of his ability as a striker. “Some players were like that, I can think of some, they will score at their clubs but when they come here, it will be hard,” Esin said. “It is not that he’s not a good striker; I know a goal will bring him his confidence.”

Boniface has been in impressive form for his club, Bayer Leverkusen, this season, scoring 10 goals with one assist in 22 appearances. Esin believes that the 24-year-old striker can translate his club form to the national team and end his goal drought. “He can come and break that jinx and maybe even score a brace. He has been getting chances, I have watched him closely,” Esin said.

Boniface was initially selected for Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations squad but was forced to withdraw due to a muscle injury, denying him the opportunity to open his international account at the tournament. Esin, however, emphasized that results remain the priority for the national team. “It is all about the results, what we want is to win. Remember Rashidi Yekini took us to the 1994 World Cup, you have to be prolific at the national team,” he added.

Former Super Eagles star Sylvanus Okpala had also advised Boniface to improve his efficiency in front of goal for the national team. “He needs to be talked to, given a lot of confidence, and reminded that as a centre forward, his primary role is to score. If he can’t score, then he should start providing assists,” Okpala said.

Esin’s backing of Boniface is a timely boost for the striker, who will be looking to make a significant impact for Nigeria in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers. With his club form and the support of former Super Eagles stars, Boniface will be confident of ending his goal drought and helping Nigeria secure crucial victories.

As Nigeria prepares to face Rwanda and Zimbabwe, the team will be relying on Boniface to provide a clinical finish in front of goal. With Esin’s endorsement and the striker’s own determination, Boniface is poised to make a significant impact for the Super Eagles and help the team achieve their World Cup qualification goals.
