The 2024/25 Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) title is almost within Remo Stars’ grasp, following their 2-0 win over Heartland of Owerri at the weekend. The victory took their points tally to 57, eight points clear of second-placed Rivers United.
Remo Stars’ lead appears insurmountable, but the battle for the remaining African inter-club competitions’ slots is still intense. The second-placed team will join Remo Stars in the 2025/26 CAF Champions League, while the third-placed team will compete in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Rivers United kept their continental dreams alive with a 2-1 win over El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri. Enyimba, who are on a four-game unbeaten streak, were denied an away victory over Ikorodu City by a 98th-minute equalizer, settling for a 2-2 draw.
Enyimba Coach, Stanley Eguma, acknowledged the setback but remains optimistic about securing a continental ticket. “We will take it one game at a time,” Eguma said. “Today we have picked a draw, we have to go back home and work harder for our home games. No game is easy; every game is very tough.”
“We have to plan for all games until the end of the season. We are still optimistic that we can get a continental ticket, but we have to work for it, and we’re still on course.”
Enyimba will continue their quest for a continental slot with a home game against Bayelsa United in Aba on Sunday. They will also face El-Sharma FC in a President Federation Cup Round of 64 fixture today.
Other matches scheduled for the weekend include Remo Stars’ away clash with Lobi Stars, Bendel Insurance hosting Sunshine Stars, and Plateau United facing Kano Pillars.
