IREPORT247NEW reported that a student who was attending King’s College Lagos passed away as a result of an outbreak of diphtheria that occurred at the school.
Diphtheria Outbreak – It has been reported by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) that there have been 1,319 deaths recorded as a result of diphtheria between the epidemiological week 19 of 2022 and the week 10 of 2025. This highlights severe gaps in vaccination coverage.
An epidemiological report that was published by the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) on its official website on Sunday stated that there were 42,642 suspected cases documented across 37 states and 350 local government units (LGAs).
Out of them, 25,812 instances, or 60.5%, were confirmed, while 5,470 cases are still unclassified after further investigation.
A total of 96.3% of all suspected cases were found in the states of Kano, Yobe, Katsina, Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, and Jigawa, according to the report
Additionally, it was found that the majority of confirmed infections (62.9 percent, or 16,234 cases) occurred in children aged one to fourteen.
The fact that just 4,981 (19.3%) of the verified cases had gotten a full dose of a vaccine that contained diphtheria toxoid is deeply concerning.
Two states, Katsina (3) and Lagos (20), reported a total of 23 probable cases during epidemiological week 10 of 2025.

According to the report, Vaccination Drives, Risk Communication, Case Management, Laboratory Testing, and Surveillance and Coordination are all part of the response measures that the NCDC has been putting into place.
All confirmed cases in 2024 were based on clinical symptoms rather than laboratory confirmation, and insufficient testing resources, particularly inadequate reagents and consumables for PCR testing on clinical samples, are some of the ongoing obstacles, according to the center. Another issue is the low test positivity rate.
