The Ministry of Interior has launched a contactless passport renewal system for Nigerians, starting with those in Europe. This initiative aims to make Nigeria passport renewals more efficient and convenient, eliminating the need for physical presence.

To apply, individuals will need to follow these steps:

  • Download the NIS Mobile App: Get the official NIS Mobile app from the Google Play Store and create a profile with a valid email address.
  • Start the Application and Make Payment: Click on “passport application services” and select the self-enrollment option. Make the required payment, and you’ll receive an application ID and reference number.
  • Proceed with Contactless Biometric Enrollment: Enter your application ID and reference number to check eligibility. If eligible, submit your biometric data directly through the app.
  • Mail Your Current Passport: Send your old passport, a self-addressed envelope, and proof of payment to the Nigeria High Commission in London.

The contactless system was first introduced in Canada and has now been expanded to Europe, the UK, and Ireland. Nigerians in these regions can renew their passports online, submitting required documents and paying fees digitally.

The processing fee for the contactless passport is $100, and applicants can expect to receive their new passports within 3-6 weeks after biometric enrollment.
