The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has promised to investigate the sexual harassment allegations made by suspended Nigerian lawmaker, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. IPU President, Dr. Tulia Ackson, stated that the union will listen to both sides of the story before taking necessary steps.
Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, was suspended by the Senate after she accused Akpabio of punishing her for refusing his sexual advances. She also submitted a petition detailing the alleged harassment.

Speaking at the Women in Parliament session in New York, Natasha described her suspension as illegal and expressed concerns that she may be held against her will by Nigerian authorities for speaking out. “I was suspended illegally because I submitted a petition of sexual harassment against the President of the Nigerian Senate,” she said.
Dr. Ackson responded by saying, “There was a matter that arose during the first session which we had this morning. The matter that was raised by our colleague from Nigeria, Senator Natasha, and because all of us heard what she said, it only serves us better if I put in a word on what she has said.”
The IPU President emphasized the importance of listening to both sides of the story, stating, “As an institution, as the IPU, we will be taking the concerns that have been raised, not only taking her side but also giving a chance to listen to the other side, as it is a custom of the IPU.”
The investigation into Natasha’s allegations is expected to take place soon, with the IPU promising to take necessary steps after listening to both sides.
