By effectively reducing the risk of building collapse, we not only protect lives and property, but also foster a sense of security that is vital for any thriving community

The Certified Accreditors’ Programme (CAP) was introduced by the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, with the intention of improving construction requirements and safety.

He stated that the fatal construction collapse that occurred in Ikoyi in 2021 was the impetus behind the idea.

During his speech that took place yesterday at the White Stone Event Centre in Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised the significant role that the initiative plays in establishing sustainable urban growth and averting additional incidents.

In response to suggestions made by a panel that reviewed the collapse of the Ikoyi building, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) went ahead and implemented the program.

Its goal is to strengthen collaboration between experts working in the built environment who are employed by the government and those working in the private sector.

Sanwo-Olu stated that the Certified Accreditors’ Programme (CAP) would improve the socio-economic well-being of the state, attract investments, enhance the aesthetics of metropolitan areas, and provide a rigorous regulatory framework to bolster the confidence of developers.

He said, “Today, we mark a pivotal moment in our journey toward a safer and more prosperous Lagos State.

“By effectively reducing the risk of building collapse, we not only protect lives and property, but also foster a sense of security that is vital for any thriving community.

“I charge all accredited firms to carry out their duties with integrity and professionalism. You are now integral players in our mission to make Lagos State a model for sustainable urban development in Africa.”

According to Dr. Olajide Babatunde, who serves as the Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS and Planning Matters, 250 expressions of interest were submitted, and that 150 businesses were selected for further consideration.

He said, “As a matter of fact, we are still going to have super Certified Accreditors’ Programme CAP agents who will be checking what we are doing so that we know we are not alone.”
