The error has been corrected, and deductions in respect of the overpayments from the salaries of affected workers are ongoing and shall continue until such overpayments are fully recovered.
The Nigerian government, which is led by President Bola Tinubu, has made the decision to impose continual salary withdrawals from federal employees in order to recover surplus payments that were issued in December 2024.
The government has attributed this scenario to a system malfunction. A statement issued on Friday by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) indicated that deductions are currently being made and will continue to be made until the overpaid funds are completely recovered.
The statement was signed by Bawa Mokwa, who is the Director of Press and Public Relations for the OAGF.
Federal employees, many of whom were unaware that the additional money they received in December was an error, have expressed broad displeasure in response to the discovery.
An increasing number of workers have been left feeling frustrated and unable to meet their financial responsibilities as a result of the unanticipated deductions, which have occurred in conjunction with the rising cost of living.
In order to ensure that all overpaid amounts are recouped, the government has made it abundantly apparent that deductions would continue.
In addition, the OAGF noted that the sums paid in January and February of 2025 will not alter without the implementation of a new compensation structure.
It reads, “There were cases of overpayments in December 2024 due to a system error. The error has been corrected, and deductions in respect of the overpayments from the salaries of affected workers are ongoing and shall continue until such overpayments are fully recovered.
“Barring any future salary adjustments, the salaries paid in January and February 2025 shall remain unchanged until a review by the Federal Government.
“According to the OAGF, batches 1 to 6 of the promotion arrears payments have been fully processed, with further payments awaiting approval from the Budget Office.”
