The Oyo State Government has issued a stern warning. Approximately 20 waste management consultants have failed to meet their contractual obligations. They did not dispose of refuse in the state.
Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, the state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, expressed disappointment. He noted that some consultants have not fulfilled their duties for months. This neglect left major streets in Ibadan littered with refuse.
Mogbonjubola stated that the government outsourced waste collection to ensure a clean environment for residents.
However, some waste management consultants have performed poorly. This performance has prompted the government to initiate a comprehensive review. They are also renewing their contracts.
The state government has initiated a comprehensive review of the waste management consultants’ contracts. They will also renew the contracts to ensure improved service delivery. Additionally, the state wants to comply with environmental regulations,” Mogbonjubola said.
The review process aims to assess the consultants’ performance. It seeks to identify areas for improvement. The goal is to enhance the efficiency of waste management services across the state.
The evaluation focuses on key performance indicators, including operational efficiency, financial compliance, regulatory adherence, innovation, sustainability, and transparency.
Mogbonjubola clarified that the review is not a witch-hunt. It is a necessary step to address public concerns. The goal is to optimize service delivery.
Upon completion, the ministry will decide whether to extend the contracts under revised terms or renegotiate them to improve performance.
The commissioner reiterated the government’s commitment to modernizing waste management. They aim to achieve this through innovative solutions. These include smart waste bins, digital monitoring systems, and expanded recycling initiatives.
“I must say that I am disappointed with the poor performance of the waste contractors. For the last two months, waste has continued to pile up on the roads. Nobody has come to evacuate it.”
If things continue this way, we will have no option but to revoke the contracts,” Mogbonjubola declared.
Mogbonjubola called on residents to be patient, assuring them that all piles of refuse would soon be cleared.
