The Lagos State Butchers’ Association is calling for the Federal Government’s intervention due to the skyrocketing price of cows, which has risen to as high as N2 million. The association’s chairman, Alhaji Taiwo Rasak, stated that the cheapest cow now costs N700,000, up from N200,000 to N350,000. This surge in price is threatening the livelihoods of butchers in Lagos, with many struggling to maintain profit margins and stay in business.

Rasak emphasized that the impact of rising cow prices on Lagos butchers cannot be overstated, with many facing reduced profit margins and some potentially shutting down their businesses if the situation doesn’t improve. He urged the government to swiftly address the mounting challenges in the sector, which demands a more rapid and effective response.

The association is seeking government intervention through funding of meat production, which Rasak described as a vital investment in the livestock sector. This support would enable butchers and farmers to remain in business, even in the face of skyrocketing cow prices. Rasak also emphasized the need for efficient disbursement of palliative loans to reach intended beneficiaries, ensuring that funds are directed towards meat sellers struggling to cope with rising costs.

The situation has become dire, with the usually vibrant Oja Awolowo Market in Mushin falling quiet due to a shortage of meat sellers. Rasak acknowledged the government’s efforts to improve the lives of Lagos butchers but stressed the need for more rapid and effective action to address the challenges faced by the sector.
