Great Britain’s Jeremiah Azu sprinted to victory in the men’s 60m at the European Athletics Indoor Championships on Saturday night, securing his first individual international title.

The 23-year-old clocked a personal best of 6.49 seconds to take gold, finishing ahead of Sweden’s Henrik Larsson, who ran 6.52 seconds. Azu’s team-mate, Andrew Robertson, claimed bronze with a time of 6.55 seconds.

Azu had already showcased his form earlier in the day, posting the fastest time in the morning heats and a European-leading mark of 6.52 seconds in the semi-finals, which he later surpassed in the final. His triumph makes him the ninth British man to win the European indoor 60m title and the first since Richard Kilty successfully defended his crown in 2017.

For Robertson, 34, the bronze marks his first individual international medal. The late call-up to the squad, who placed fourth in the same event in 2021, capped an impressive performance with a podium finish.

The success of Azu and Robertson adds to Great Britain’s medal haul at the championships, following bronze medals earned by 1500m runner Revee Walcott-Nolan and the mixed 4x400m relay team.
