Nnamdi Kanu’s case has taken a significant turn with the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, reassigning the case to a new judge. This development comes six months after the previous judge, Justice Binta Nyako, recused herself from the case.
Kanu’s counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed that the legal team received two official letters – one from the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and the other from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court – informing them of the reassignment. Kanu has expressed gratitude to the CJN for her swift response and to the public for their support in demanding a proper judicial process.
The delay in reassigning the case had raised concerns about Kanu’s constitutional right to a fair and speedy trial. However, with the case now reassigned, Kanu’s legal team will focus on preparing his defense. Kanu, who has been in detention since June 2021, maintains his innocence and has repeatedly called for due process in his trial.
The reassignment of the case is expected to pave the way for fresh legal proceedings. This development is a significant step towards ensuring that Kanu receives a fair trial. As Ejimakor noted, “With these latest developments, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his legal team will now focus on preparing his defense”.
