Bayer Leverkusen missed a crucial opportunity to tighten the race for the Bundesliga title against Bayern Munich. They suffered a 2-0 defeat to Werder Bremen at the BayArena.

This loss marks their first set of consecutive defeats since May 2023.In last season’s corresponding match, Leverkusen clinched the Bundesliga title with an impressive 5-0 victory.

Florian Wirtz, who netted a hat-trick in that game, found himself on the bench. Xabi Alonso made strategic rotations ahead of their high-stakes UEFA Champions League clash with Bayern. This rotation backfired in the first half, as Leverkusen delivered a disjointed performance, and Bremen seized the opportunity early on. Bremen showcased excellent teamwork within just seven minutes. Romano Schmid scored a goal after a well-executed build-up.

By the 20-minute mark, Leverkusen had yet to register a shot, and their struggles continued throughout the half. Emiliano Buendía’s low effort was easily saved by Michael Zetterer, while Aleix García’s late free-kick rattled the crossbar. Bremen almost doubled their lead before halftime. MiloÅ¡ Veljković scored, but the goal was disallowed due to offside.

Xabi Alonso wasn’t satisfied with his team’s performance and made a triple substitution at halftime, bringing Wirtz into the fray. Unfortunately for Leverkusen, their star player was forced off. This occurred less than 15 minutes later due to a heavy challenge from Mitchell Weiser. Similar to the first half, the home team struggled to create chances. They failed to register a shot in the opening stages of the second half.

With the news that Bayern was trailing to Bochum, Leverkusen found a renewed sense of urgency. Exequiel Palacios became the spark they so desperately needed. He drove forward and unleashed a low shot. Zetterer brilliantly saved it. Shortly after, Palacios made another attempt that tested the Bremen keeper again. Unlike last season, Leverkusen couldn’t find the late magic. Any hopes of a comeback were dashed in stoppage time. Justin Njinmah scored from Keke Topp’s assist.

This defeat means Bremen has only managed two wins in their last 11 matches in 2025. They have just two victories in their last 16 encounters against Leverkusen. Leverkusen now find themselves eight points adrift of Bundesliga leaders Bayern. They will face Bayern in midweek after suffering their first defeat in 12 Bundesliga home games.
