Following the horrific and senseless execution of Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu in Kaduna State, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria has expressed its deepest sadness.

Both the family of Father Okechukwu, the congregation, and the community were extended condolences by the Mission in a statement that was forcefully worded and condemned the awful act of violence that occurred.

“We strongly condemn this horrific act of violence. We extend our deepest condolences to the family, congregation, and community of Father Okechukwu, who have suffered an immeasurable loss.

“Our thoughts are with them during this time of profound grief. We call on the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Just one day after he was taken hostage, the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan in Kaduna revealed that its priest, Reverend Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu, has passed away.

Okechukwu was taken from his home on Tuesday evening, and according to a statement that was signed by the Chancellor of the Diocese, Reverend Fr. Jacob Shanet, he was murdered in the morning on Wednesday.

“After being taken by his abductors, we regret to inform you that Fr Sylvester was cruelly killed in the early hours of Wednesday, March 5.

“It is yet to be determined why he was killed. This untimely and brutal loss has left us broken and devastated. He was always available and accessible to his parishioners.

“His untimely death has left an indelible void within our diocesan family, and we share in the pain of his passing with his family, friends and all those who loved him.

The members of the Takad community were urged to maintain their composure and be consistent in their prayers, and they were also urged to refrain from taking the law into their own.
