The Lagos State House of Assembly speakership tussle is heating up. Today, March 7, 2025, lawmakers arrived at the State High Court in Ikeja, Lagos, for the continued hearing of a case filed by Mudashiru Obasa, challenging his removal as Speaker.
Obasa was removed by 36 lawmakers on January 13, 2025, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The respondents in the suit include the lawmakers and Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, who was elected to replace Obasa but has since stepped down, citing respect for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leadership.
The court case has been ongoing since February 20, with prominent lawyers like Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), Femi Falana (SAN), and Tayo Oyetibo (SAN) representing the parties involved.
In a recent development, the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) directed both Obasa and Meranda to resign, paving the way for a new Speaker to emerge from Lagos West. However, the court’s decision will ultimately determine the outcome of this speakership tussle.
