Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was stretchered off after a horror challenge from Liam Roberts, Millwall goalkeeper was given a red card; Mateta was later discharged from hospital with 25 stitches in his ear. Palace beat Millwall 3-1 to reach FA Cup quarter-finals
Roberts’ high boot caused Mateta to have 25 stitches in his left ear after the pair came together to challenge for the ball during last Saturday’s FA Cup fifth-round game at Selhurst Park.
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish describe the incident as “the most reckless challenge I’ve ever seen”.
The Football Association submitted a claim to have the ban extended from the standard three matches, claiming three games was “clearly insufficient” for the offence, and an independent regulatory panel issued a six-match suspension on Friday.
Milwall say they are “disappointed with the outcome, but respect the process that has been undertaken”.
