Dr. Doyin Okupe, a notable Nigerian physician, Co-founder of Royal Cross Medical Centrepolitician, and former presidential assistant, passed away recently at the age of 72. He passed away on November 9, 2024.
In the weeks leading up to his passing, Dr. Okupe had been in a severe condition, sources who were close to the family told journalists
It was claimed that his health had substantially deteriorated, which caused his loved ones and supporters to feel concerned.
Okupe was admitted to the hospital in October 2023 for treatment of prostate cancer. He was then transported to Israel for further therapy. It was discovered that his condition did not improve as he and his family had anticipated it would.
It was sixteen years ago when Okupe was initially diagnosed with prostate cancer. Subsequently, he was diagnosed with sarcoma for the right shoulder.
Okupe was appointed Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and subsequently served as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
In Obalende, Lagos, Okupe, along with his colleagues Dr. Seyi Roberts and Dr. Ladi Okuboyejo, contributed to the establishment of the Royal Cross Medical Centre. It was during his tenure as the center’s Managing Director that he made a substantial contribution to the provision of medical treatment in the area.
Following Okupe’s conviction for money laundering in December 2022, he terminated his participation in Obi’s campaign.
After the outcomes of the general election in 2023, he eventually tendered his resignation from the Labour Party. Suddenly, Okupe became an outspoken supporter of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, and he frequently participated in political discussions and commentary.
The political stance that Okupe took was considered to be strong, and his thoughts were known to be uncensored.
