Former Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Ohanenye, is currently being questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged involvement in a N138 million fraud. The investigation centers on the misappropriation, violation of procurement processes, and diversion of public funds allocated to the ministry in the 2023 budget.
According to a top source within the commission, Ohanenye arrived at the EFCC headquarters on Thursday at 11 a.m. and was still being interrogated by operatives. The source revealed that “Investigators are questioning former Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, over her alleged role in the misappropriation, violation of procurement processes, and diversion of public funds totaling N138,413,253.89”.
The EFCC’s investigation uncovered that funds donated for the P-Bat Cares for Women Initiative were diverted for Ohanenye’s personal enrichment. Efforts to obtain a reaction from the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, were unsuccessful.
Ohanenye was one of five ministers relieved of their duties following the 19th Federal Executive Council meeting in October 2024. The EFCC’s questioning of Ohanenye is part of an ongoing effort to address corruption and ensure accountability in government.
The allegations against Ohanenye are serious and highlight the need for transparency and oversight in government spending. The EFCC’s investigation and potential prosecution of Ohanenye demonstrate a commitment to addressing corruption and promoting good governance.
