The suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Nigerian Senate has ignited a firestorm of criticism, with many condemning the move as a blatant disregard for her rights and a threat to democratic principles. Deji Adeyanju, a human rights lawyer, has joined the chorus of condemnation, urging Senator Akpoti to challenge her suspension in court.
Adeyanju’s statement highlights the gross injustice of the suspension, emphasizing that the Senate has an obligation to investigate the allegations made by Natasha thoroughly. He notes that the lack of due process in this investigation is alarming, particularly given the serious allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate remarks made against Senator Godswill Akpabio.
“The Senate has no right to suspend her, and the people of Kogi Central are being denied proper representation as a result,” Adeyanju said.
This incident has shed light on the persistent trend of gender discrimination and verbal harassment in Nigeria’s political institutions. As Adeyanju notes, women who seek change face these challenges daily in the corridors of power.
The Kogi State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has also condemned the suspension, calling it unjust and a clear infringement on the senator’s rights and privileges. The party has demanded that the Senate reverse the suspension and restore Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s rights and privileges.
Former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili has also weighed in, calling the suspension a “democratic aberration” and demanding a proper review of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims.
