Concerns are growing over the lack of progress in the 10th National Assembly, with many criticizing the legislature’s focus on drama and intrigue rather than meaningful legislation.

The Senate, led by President Godswill Akpabio, has been marred by controversy, including a recent public altercation between Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

As Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Okonkwo noted, “It is not democracy that Nigeria is currently operating, because we do not have the institution that delivers democracy.”

The lack of intellectual rigor among politicians has also been cited as a major issue, with Prince Adewole Adebayo stating, “When I see people ready to sell their votes, I know for sure that as an opposition figure, I have not done my job well.”

The National Assembly’s reputation has been further tarnished by allegations of corruption and abuse of power.

As Luqman Isiaka, a sociologist, emphasized, “A lacklustre parliament can severely undermine good governance by failing to represent the populace, produce effective legislation, and hold the executive accountable.”

The 10th Assembly’s focus on drama and intrigue has led many to question its ability to effectively serve the Nigerian people.
