Eha-Amufu, which is located in the Isi-Uzu local government area of Enugu State, has been entirely shut down in terms of both economic and social activity.
This comes as thousands of women have mounted a large protest against the Fulani herdsmen who have been attacking and killing people in the area relentlessly.
For a stretch of the Nkalagu-Eha-Amufu-Ikem-Obollo-Afor Federal Highway that was two kilometres long, the women, who came from seven different autonomous communities, blocked the roadway.
A similar demonstration was held on Tuesday by hundreds of women from Eha-Ohala, which is comprised of the Mgbuji Umujove and Abor autonomous communities.
This demonstration follows that demonstration. According to reports, the attacks have resulted in the deaths of over 150 people and have forced locals to relocate from their farms and homes since 2021.
The demonstrators accused security services and some government officials of being complicit in the attacks and of failing to take action.
“We are being raped, beaten, and mutilated by suspected herdsmen, they cried out.
“Our husbands and sons are too afraid to go to their farms. When we go to our farms, we are beaten and raped by Fulani herdsmen, who also insert sticks into our private parts.”
The demonstration was sparked by allegations that Mr. Obiora Obeagu, the chairman of the Isi-Uzu Council, asserted that the demonstration that took place on Tuesday was sponsored and that there were no herdsmen assaults or killings in the Eha-Amufu area.
During the demonstration, Mrs. Angela Ogenyi, who was one of the leaders, referred to Mr. Obeagu as a snitch who makes money off of the blood of his people.
“We want the governor to come and address us if we are still part of the state.
“Today, we the women of entire Eha-Amufu, comprising Mgbuji, Umujove, Agu-amede, Abor, Isu, Orokoro, Ikpakpara, Umuhu, Amede, and Ihenyi have decided to stage the mother of all protests to draw the attention of Governor Peter Mbah to the killings.
“He has done little or nothing to stop the carnage since he assumed office in 2023.
“You can see the population of women protesting. Who is sponsoring us? We want the governor to come and address us if we are still part of the state.
“It is not only when election comes that we are remembered. If they kill all of us before 2027, he will have nobody to vote for him or even rig the election for him. Those in authority should take responsibility for what is going on in Eha-Amufu.”
