Two users of TikTok, Ahmad Isa and Maryam Musa, were each given a sentence of one year in prison by a Magistrate Court in Kano.

The videos that they shared were found to be objectionable to individuals’ moral and religious beliefs.

Prior to their detention, the Kano State Censorship Board had taken the two individuals into custody on the grounds that they had violated public morality through their posts on social media.

The prosecutor, Garzali Maigari Bichi, brought charges against the convicted individuals, accusing them of engaging in criminal conspiracy and spreading illegal content on the internet during the proceedings of the court.

The content creators (defendants) pleaded guilty to both of the accusations. In his sentencing, the presiding magistrate, Hadiza Muhammad Hassan, also provided the convicted individuals with the option of paying a fine of one hundred thousand Nigerian naira.
