In a significant development, Inter Milan and AC Milan’s long-awaited bid to build a new stadium on the site of the iconic San Siro has received a major boost. Milan’s mayor, Giuseppe Sala, announced on Tuesday that he hopes to sell the old ground to the Serie A clubs before the summer.

The mayor revealed that he is expecting a formal feasibility study and purchase offer from the two clubs, which he will then present to Milan’s city council. Sala emphasized that the aim is to sell the stadium and surrounding area by the start of the summer holidays.

The proposed project, which was initially priced at 1.3 billion euros, involves a partial demolition of the city-owned San Siro, with the site being repurposed for green space, sports facilities, and entertainment venues. A new stadium, with a capacity of over 70,000, would be built on adjacent land, which the clubs would purchase rather than rent.

The sale of the San Siro is crucial, as a building protection order preventing demolition of the current stadium’s second tier will come into effect if the land is still publicly owned by the end of the year. With the mayor’s backing, Inter Milan and AC Milan’s dream of a new stadium is now one step closer to reality.
