Following a tragic explosion on the Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway that claimed 16 lives, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has cautioned commercial vehicle operators against transporting flammable materials.

The governor emphasized the need for stringent handling and transportation protocols to prevent such incidents.

A commercial vehicle, a white Mazda bus with registration number KJA949YJ, was carrying a filled gas cylinder that exploded, causing a fire outbreak. The governor described the accident as preventable and urged drivers to exercise caution.

Governor Abiodun called on the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria to educate their members about the dangers of transporting hazardous materials. He emphasized the importance of community vigilance and adherence to safety regulations in preventing similar tragedies.

Some common flammable household items that should be handled with caution include:

1. *Nail polish remover*: contains acetone, which can ignite easily

2. *Cooking oils*: can catch fire when exposed to heat or flames

3. *Aerosol cans*: can explode when exposed to high temperatures

4. *Rubbing alcohol and hand sanitizer*: can ignite easily due to their low flash points

5. *Gasoline, diesel fuel, and motor oil*: highly flammable and should be handled with care

The governor’s warning highlights the importance of safety protocols in preventing accidents. Drivers and transporters must take responsibility for ensuring the safe transportation of goods, especially hazardous materials.

Community involvement is crucial in preventing accidents. Residents should report any suspicious activities or vehicles transporting hazardous materials to the authorities.

The government should implement regulatory measures to ensure that drivers and transporters comply with safety protocols. This includes regular inspections, licensing, and penalties for non-compliance.

The tragic explosion on the Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway serves as a reminder of the importance of safety protocols and responsible transportation practices. Governor Abiodun’s warning to drivers and transporters is a step in the right direction, and it is essential that all stakeholders work together to prevent similar accidents in the future.
