The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ibadan Branch, has appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State to reconstitute the Oyo State Judicial Service Commission dissolved in December 2024. In a letter addressed to the governor, NBA Chairman Ibrahim Lawal emphasized the importance of the commission in the administration of justice in the state.
Lawal stressed that the commission’s duties are designed to aid the smooth running of the judicial system, highlighting its role in advising the National Judicial Council on suitable persons for nomination to various judicial offices.
He also noted that the commission has the power to recommend the removal of judicial officers and exercise disciplinary control over certain staff members.
The NBA chairman expressed deep concern about the non-availability of operational vehicles for magistrates and Presidents of Grade A Customary Courts, describing the situation as “demeaning” and “exposing these judicial officers to unimaginable risks.”
The NBA has urged Governor Makinde to reconstitute the commission as soon as possible, adhering strictly to the provisions of the Constitution.
They also appealed to the governor to provide operational vehicles for magistrates and Presidents of Grade A Customary Courts, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.
