We are making recommendation that in many of the areas where there is long stretch that records high frequencies of petroleum tanker accidents on the road, like coming into Onitsha from Enugu, efforts should be made to curb this.

In an effort to reduce the number of fire accidents involving gasoline tankers, the Fire Protection Association of Nigeria (FPAN) has encouraged both the government and the private sector to launch a comprehensive program.

It was at the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services (LSFRS) conference room in Ikeja, Lagos, that the Federal Police Association of Nigeria (FPAN) held a news conference.

In many instances, these accidents have resulted in significant disruptions to the economic and social life of the community, as well as deaths, injuries, and huge losses of properties and assets, as stated by the FPAN.

A number of issues, including deficiencies in training in key activity areas of the supply chain, as well as mechanical and civil engineering flaws in the supply chain that include petroleum tankers, were among the issues that were advised to need immediate attention.

Engr. Peter Onyeri, Chairman of the Board of Fellows of the Federation of Petroleum Associations of Nigeria (FPAN), pointed out that the linkage between the head and body of petroleum tankers requires special care. He was speaking on behalf of Alh Shehu Dambatta, President of the FPAN.

He said, “We are making recommendation that in many of the areas where there is long stretch that records high frequencies of petroleum tanker accidents on the road, like coming into Onitsha from Enugu, efforts should be made to curb this.

“The Association is saying that there must be a strategic collaborative action between FPAN and government, to address the cause of this accidents. Petroleum products are special things that must not be left in the care of just anyone. We need government to give us backing to work with relevant stakeholders.”

The state government is eager to ensure that accidents of this nature are brought to a halt, as stated by Mr. Amodu Shakiru, who is a representative of the Director of the LSFRS.
