
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament has reaffirmed its commitment to regional integration, with Speaker Memounatou Ibrahim emphasizing the need for stronger collaboration to address regional challenges.
At the opening of the first Extraordinary Session and seminar of the Parliament for 2025 in Lagos State, Ibrahim noted that the pursuit of a single currency remains a top priority. She identified steps towards building a brighter future for West Africa, including strengthening regional institutions for responsive, inclusive, and effective economic development.
Ibrahim acknowledged the recent exit of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso from ECOWAS, assuring that measures are being taken to mitigate the impacts on remaining member states. She called for deeper dialogue with the exiting countries, emphasizing that shared regional ties remain imperative.
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, commended the Parliament’s efforts in advancing peace, security, and unity within the region. He advocated for greater investments in developing younger generations through education and job creation.
First Deputy Speaker Senator Jibrin Barau emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts, stating, “Through our collaborative efforts and decision-making, we can strengthen our region and work together towards shared goals that advance prosperity and progress.”
