Manchester United are out of the FA Cup after a penalty shootout defeat to Fulham at Old Trafford.
The two sides could not be separated after regular time and extra time. The game offered little in quality from either team. However, Marco Silva’s side will advance to the quarter-finals after the holders were beaten 4-3 on penalties.
The deadlock wasn’t broken until the dying minutes of the first half. Fulham struck from a corner, capitalizing on chaos from United in defense. Calvin Bassey nodded home.
The FA Cup defending champions appeared on the verge of elimination. The clock ticked down in the tense match. Just when it seemed all hope was lost, Bruno Fernandes, displaying exceptional skill and composure, netted a stunning equaliser. He connected perfectly with a pinpoint cross from Diogo Dalot. The ball flew past the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper. This reignited the team’s hopes for another deep run in the competition.
Fulham controlled possession for the majority of the match, showcasing their tactical prowess and ball-handling skills. As the game progressed, Manchester United found themselves on the back foot. However, they managed to create a few late opportunities to steal a win. Chido Obi-Martin tested the Fulham defense with a dynamic run and shot. Alejandro Garnacho also came close. He displayed his pace and dribbling ability. However, both players could not find the back of the net. The match was tightly contested. This led to a grueling period of extra time. Both teams sought to break the deadlock.
The shootout was level until United’s fourth kick. Leno managed to get enough behind Victor Lindelof’s shot. He kept it out of his net. Fernandes, Dalot and Casemiro had all found the net before then.
