Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has launched a Mobile Refill Unit as part of the Presidential CNG Initiative, in partnership with Portland Gas Ltd. This move marks a significant step towards cleaner energy adoption and sustainable transportation in Lagos.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Lagos, emphasizing that the CNG transition strategy aligns with the state’s present agenda and broader goal of improving air quality.

Key Highlights of the Initiative:

  • Vehicle Conversion: The government aims to convert 10% of the state’s vehicle fleet (about 400,000 vehicles) to CNG over the next three years.
  • Government-Owned Vehicles: 2,000 government-owned vehicles, including buses and security vehicles, will switch to CNG by the second quarter of 2025.
  • Refueling Stations: Four CNG refueling stations will be established by mid-2025, with a total of 15 stations operational by the year’s end.
  • Private-Sector Participation: The infrastructure expansion is expected to accelerate private-sector participation in the shift toward cleaner energy solutions.

Sanwo-Olu commended the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority for successfully piloting CNG adoption in its fleet and urged government agencies, investors, transport operators, and private sector players to collaborate in making Lagos a national model for sustainable urban mobility.

The Presidential CNG Initiative and Portland Gas Ltd were also lauded for their commitment to this energy transition, which is seen as a strategic move toward a smarter, cleaner, and more prosperous Lagos.
