Saudi Arabia has announced that the holy month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025, following the sighting of the Ramadan crescent in the Kingdom.
This announcement was made by the Saudi Royal Court, which also stated that Taraweeh prayer will be held this evening at Masjid Bin Bāz after Easha Prayer.
Other countries, including Qatar and Oman, have also officially announced that Ramadan will be observed on Saturday, March 1. However, the Sultan of Sokoto and the President of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Saad Abubakar, is yet to announce the sighting of the crescent moon.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a period of fasting, reflection, and spiritual growth for Muslims worldwide. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and is considered mandatory for all healthy Muslims. However, certain individuals, such as young children, sick individuals, travelers, and women who are pregnant, nursing, or menstruating, are exempt from fasting.
During Ramadan, working hours for private and public employees and schoolchildren are typically reduced. Muslims also gather for Taraweeh prayers in mosques and engage in various acts of charity and kindness.
The sighting of the crescent moon marks the beginning of Ramadan, and Muslims have followed this tradition for thousands of years. The moon sighting committees in various countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman, have confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon, marking the start of Ramadan.
