The time in which the federal government played unnecessary responsibilities to the states has come to an end.

It is no longer the case that the federal government will accept responsibility for the outstanding liabilities of the states; therefore, the time in which the federal government played unnecessary responsibilities to the states has come to an end.

The announcement of the new posture was made by Dr. Oluwatoyin Madein, the Accountant General of the Federation (AGoF), yesterday while she was visiting the Federal Pay Office in Kano.

In light of the fact that the federal government would no longer permit itself to be encumbered by unpaid liabilities, Madein issued an edict to the states, urging them to prevent income leakages and improve their enhanced revenue generation.

The need of maintaining financial discipline was emphasized by Madein, who also instructed Federal Pay Officers (FPOs) to make certain that Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) adhered to the steps that the government had taken to reform public financial management, according to the statement by Bawa Mokwa, the director of Press and Public Relations Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.

She strongly encouraged non-governmental organizations (FPOs) to exercise fiscal responsibility and implement new financial reforms in their day-to-day operations.

Madein stated, “This will ensure that state governments receive their revenues as and when due, and the Federal Government will not be burdened by unpaid liabilities.

“The use of manual processes in carrying out financial activities will soon be over. The use of modern technology in the accounting profession is key and vital.

Madein disclosed that her organization has initiated the implementation of an enterprise concept management system to ensure the complete digitization of financial activities, including those of FPOs.

She said, “This system will involve all staff members and serve as a tool for measuring management performance.”
