Renowned opposition leader Okai has been arrested by Department of State Services (DSS), purportedly on the instruction of Ahmed Usman Ododo, the governor of Kogi State.

A political activist from Kogi and a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Austin Okai, was taken into custody by the Department of State Services (DSS), purportedly on the instruction of Ahmed Usman Ododo, the governor of Kogi State.

Okai was taken away from his apartment in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja on Wednesday morning, according to a video that went viral. The security personnel were highly armed.

Although the exact cause for his detention is unknown, sources point to his vociferous criticism of the Kogi State government as possibly influencing it.

Renowned opposition leader Okai has regularly criticised government policies and leadership. The DSS had not released any formal announcement about Okai’s detention as of the time this news was filed.

On Wednesday, Austin’s wife informed Newsmen that during their operation the DSS did not show an arrest warrant.

She said, “They came to arrest him at our home in Abuja without a warrant. In fact, they ransacked our house and forced their way inside.

“I asked them for the arrest warrant, but no one could provide one. All they knew was that they wanted to take him away.

“They claimed they needed him for questioning, so I asked, ‘If you need someone for questioning, did you invite him, and did he decline? Where is your warrant?’ There was nothing to show.

“They took him away, and I don’t even know the extent of the harassment he’s facing. They also took his gadgets.”
