Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has commended the Federal Government for completing the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) offices in some states, including Kebbi.

The governor’s praise came during the commissioning of the Kebbi State Office of NHRC in Birnin Kebbi on Monday.

Idris, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Yakubu Bala-Tafida, acknowledged the Federal Government’s commitment to improving cooperation and coordination in planning and implementing human rights across the country. He attributed this commitment to the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.

The governor pledged his administration’s support for the NHRC, promising to connect the office to the national grid and provide an operational vehicle. He also announced the appointment of a Special Adviser on Human Rights Protection and Enforcement to his administration.

Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, assured that the Federal Government under Tinubu’s leadership respects the independence of the NHRC. Fagbemi emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights, providing an enabling environment for the commission to discharge its mandate.

The Chairperson, Governing Council of NHRC, Dr. Salamatu Suleiman, noted that the commission has constructed and completed nine new offices, including the Kebbi State office, with support from the budget office and National Assembly. She appealed for more funds to realize the commission’s mandate and protect Nigerians’ rights.

Dr. Tony Ojukwu, Executive Secretary of NHRC, emphasized the commission’s aims to promote, protect, and enforce human rights in Nigeria, sensitizing stakeholders on critical issues. He described the NHRC’s mandate as a moral imperative to build a society founded on dignity, freedom, and justice.
