Vatican City – Pope Francis, who has been hospitalized since February 14, spent a good night and is resting, according to the Vatican.

The 88-year-old Pope, who has been suffering from pneumonia in both lungs, was initially diagnosed with bronchitis but his condition worsened over the weekend.

The Vatican reported that the Pope’s condition remains reserved, but he is alert and receiving high-flow oxygen through a nasal cannula. Blood tests also showed an initial, mild renal failure, which is currently under control.

Professor Sergio Alfieri, leading the medical team treating the Pope, warned that the real risk in such cases is the germs passing into the blood, which could result in sepsis, a life-threatening condition.

The Pope’s prolonged hospitalization has sparked widespread concern, with Catholics around the world praying for his recovery. Speculation has also risen about whether he might step down, but he has repeatedly stated that it is not the time.

Pope Francis has been the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church since 2013. His hospitalization is the longest of his papacy, and the Vatican continues to provide updates on his condition.
